Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy in the Treatment of the Urinary Stone

Abstract
Since the introduction of new less invasive methods, such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PNL) and stone extraction using ureteroscope(URS), and above all, since the clinical application of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy(ESWL), policies for stone management have changed completely.
ESWL has now been in clinical use for nearly 7 years, and the results which have been gathered so far indicate clearly that this new noninvasive method of reducing urinary stones to a size suitable for spontaneous passage in the urine has become the least traumatic, most effective, least time-consuming and most easily applied technique to treat renal and ureteral stones. Now nearly all the stones can be successfully treated by ESWL mono therapy or by combining ESWL and PNL or URS, while surgery is still preferred in those with a peripheral stone mass.
Herein, the history and new alternate technology of ESWL, and suggestions for ESWL therapy with adjuvant endourologic procedures were reviewed.
